More than 80,000 books. That’s how many came up on Amazon when I did a search under Books for “health.” A search for “healthy eating” brought up 40,000.
A Google search for “healthy diet” yielded 7,840,000,000 results!
How frustrating when you just want to know how to make healthy changes so you can feel better.
I faced these same issues during my journey back to health after being seriously ill with lupus and other autoimmune diseases.
I tried so many different fad health diets and nutritional supplements and herbs. Sometimes things improved a little. Sometimes they got worse.
But I wasn’t able to completely regain my health no matter how hard I tried. That’s what led me to study herbalism and holistic nutrition.
And I learned that we each have unique needs because of our bio individuality. We need the diet, lifestyle, herbs, and nutritional supplements that fit us.
1. Your Root Causes
To get healthy, we need to know what structures and functions in our body aren’t doing well so we can support them and nourish them back to health. These underlying issues are our root causes.
For example, one woman experiencing menopause might be thin with loss of bone density and insomnia that causes her hours of lost sleep each night.
Another woman going through menopause might be having hot flashes, night sweats, struggles with weight gain, and urinary problems.
A one-size-fits-all herbal formula for “healthy women’s transition” might not do much for either of them because they have different underlying issues going on.
2. Your Energetics
In our Western way of thinking, the concept of energetics is not always well understood or considered, but it’s an important part of our unique needs.
Herbs, food, our bodies, even the climate and weather we live in all have energetics. Hot, cold, damp, dry, constricting, expanding, upward moving, downward moving, etc.
These are a few examples of the many energetics that are at play in our health at all times.
This is especially important to know when making custom, balanced herbal formulas for someone.
For example, you wouldn’t want to take warming herbs during a heat wave in the summer if you naturally have a warm constitution and an acute heat imbalance condition in your body. This could make you feel worse.
Without an understanding of someone’s energetic needs and the energetic patterns of different herbs, it would be easy to actually create greater imbalances in the person you’re making the herbal formula for.
3. Your Level of Health
Some people might already be going on daily walks or even working out at the gym regularly. Others may be struggling to even move due to arthritis.
A person who’s frail and thin and has very little energy left after a long health struggle will need to be nourished well and built up.
Herbs and supplements designed to deeply cleanse or a restrictive elimination diet could leave that person even thinner and weaker and wouldn’t be a good fit for them.
These are some of the many factors that have to be considered to make a personalized wellness program that meets people at their level of health.
4. Your Skills and Abilities
A personalized wellness program involves setting goals and then looking at what skills are needed to take action on those goals. Everyone’s needs and abilities are different.
One person might have been a chef their whole life and can easily find new healthy recipes and cook delicious meals. They might already be eating a lot of healthy foods like quinoa and kefir.
Someone else may have relied on their spouse to do the cooking their whole life. Or they might have eaten a diet of mostly processed foods because they don’t have cooking skills or aren’t familiar with healthy foods. They may not have the same skills to plan, shop for, and cook healthy meals.
Some people are Type A personalities who find it easy to set goals and take the actions needed to accomplish them.
Others might be going through difficult circumstances in their lives that are causing them to feel stuck and overwhelmed with even the smallest of tasks.
So it’s important to identify where everyone’s abilities and skill levels are at and help them discover the actions they’re capable of taking, one strategic step at a time, to feel successful and move forward.
Holistic Health isn’t one size fits all. When diet, lifestyle, herbs, nutritional supplements, and the right plan for you are all personalized, success happens!
